Rainbow Springs Community Recreation Area
Rainbow Springs Community Recreation Area is the result of a grass roots effort led by local neighborhood associations to rehabilitate the internal and now-abandoned golf course and country club. Similar to many golf course communities across the country, the course is no longer able to remain open due to the decline in the sport’s popularity. With the development of a creative program evaluation and master plan, the continuous green areas associated with the golf course offers itself perfectly to a family oriented recreation facility while its proximity to the Rainbow River and spring head attract visitors from the surrounding counties. Castle Bay, together with the Marion County, created a model plan to reclaim the overgrown and defunct course to provide a truly unique outdoor recreation experience for the surrounding community and its visitors. Through the rehabilitation of the course’s existing cart path, a 5 mile multi-use trail was created to circumnavigate the park. Other on-site amenities include children’s fishing pond, dog park, swimming pool, disc golf course, and an amphitheater.
